We attach great importance to the digitalisation of processes as part of the energy transition because the energy mix of the future will place greater demands on the energy industry.

The intermittency of renewable energies requires a flexibilization and automation of network control. The Internet of Things (IoT) draws on intelligent sensor and communication technologies to allow networking and real-time control of energy infrastructures. Other technologies offer the possibility of making energy transmission safer and more efficient. A dedicated digitalisation team delivers projects across different departments – either in-house or in cooperation with external partners.

All employees at OGE are part of this digital transformation. Through targeted training and cultural measures, we are transforming ourselves into a modern, digital employer.

Digital transformation

From container ship to speedboat

There are two developments at the core of Industry 4.0 – the current age of digitalisation: networking and system self-control.

With networked systems, information is exchanged in the form of data so that devices, machines and also people can respond better to each other.

Another aspect is self-control of machines and systems. To this end, machines and the goods they produce are gradually equipped with sensors which they use to communicate permanently – among each other and with other systems. This is how product development, production, sales, suppliers and customers are interconnected in the digitalised corporate world. We use these principles to digitalise company processes.

Digi wave

Enthusiastically creating added value together by supporting digital technologies

The so-called ‘digi wave’ has been successful at OGE for a number of years. Digi wave is the starting point for many digitalisation projects and initiatives.

It involves workshops where varying methods are used to identify digitalisation potential and trial new technologies as MVPs (minimum viable products). After successful evaluation, an MVP can then be scaled up as a project. 

One very successful project is ‘Digimesse’ (‘digi fair’). At four interactive stations at our head office in Essen, our employees were able to experience exciting technologies first-hand over a period of two months and find out at which interfaces they are used at OGE.

Each station had its own topic to be experienced: from the Internet of Things to use cases of artificial intelligence, giving our employees the opportunity to get to know new technologies and learn about the new and innovative ways in which they are used at OGE.

Digital Expert

The chance to help shape digital transformation

Together, the Digital Campus Zollverein, the Schmiede Zollverein and RWTH Aachen Business School have set up the Digital Expert Zollverein programme, which is intended to provide impetus for digital transformation in one's own organisation.

The programme enables participants to recognise the potential for the use of new digital technologies in their own company context and to develop and implement concrete solutions on this basis. With lecturers from research and practice, participants are introduced to the key drivers of digitalisation over a period of six months at the Zollverein Living Lab and supported in the development of important questions and solutions, particularly in the area of hydrogen.

SPOT

The SPOT robot offers various application options at OGE

The SPOT robot is an autonomous walking robot that can move freely even on difficult terrain and will support us in the future.

SPOT is able to carry equipment weighing up to 14 kg. There are many possible uses for such an application, ranging from remote maintenance and monitoring tasks to productive activities. For us, it will first be important to bring the platform into our own portfolio to ensure availability for all future applications.

Corporate Digital Responsibility

Driving responsible digitalisation

We have placed the conceptualisation of our CDR concept under the heading "We drive responsible digitalisation – together, enthusiastically creating added value".

Our goal is to take responsibility for employees, the region and society in terms of sustainability and digital transformation. In a joint interdisciplinary team, we have defined and implemented our vision of a responsible approach to digitalisation. Our concept includes the dimensions Green IT, Tech for Good, Digital Inclusion and Competence as well as Privacy.
