This was the motto OGE had selected for its fourth Energy Policy Dialogue in Berlin. More than 100 guests from politics, business, industry and several associations accepted the invitation to discuss the role CH₄, H₂ and CO₂ molecules can play in the energy system of the future. With its Energy Policy Dialogue, OGE offers a platform for bringing together stakeholders from across politics, business, industry and associations and facilitating debate on key topics relating to the energy transition.
The transformation in Germany is no longer a project for the future. It is happening right now. This is illustrated by the gradual development of the hydrogen core network, the first sections of which will go into operation by the end of this year. Less than two weeks ago, the two houses of the German parliament, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, also passed the amendment to the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act, thereby laying the foundation for a Carbon Management Programme. However, the existing natural gas network remain indispensable for ensuring full security of supply this winter and will continue to be expanded in a targeted manner. Also, LNG deliveries will reach a new high in Germany this year.
In his welcoming address, CEO Dr Thomas Hüwener highlighted the role of the three molecules underlying OGE's corporate strategy: "Natural gas is a bridge to a greenhouse gas-neutral future. It stabilises the electricity system today and will it remain essential for energy security over the next two decades. Hydrogen is the next logical step, because it is climate-neutral, flexible, and can be stored and transported in large quantities. The same applies to carbon management. Some emissions will continue to be difficult to avoid in the future, which is why OGE is working on several CO₂ pipeline projects as another step in the energy transition."
The high-profile panellists in Berlin included Dr Alexander Lücke, Head of the National Economic Security, Energy Security, Natural Gas and LNG Division at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Dr Kirsten Westphal, Member of the Executive Board of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), and Dr Thomas Hüwener, Chairman of the Board of Management of the host OGE. The subsequent panel discussion was moderated by Marco Seiffert (radioeins/rbb television).
